At the halfway point of the 2013 football season, there has been a whirlwind of controversy surrounding Jadeveon Clowney, with most of it being negative. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the future first rounder has had an immense effect on opposing offenses as far as scheming around the 6’6, 260 pound defensive end. Whether it is double teams, triple teams, or chip blocks from the TE’s or running backs, opposing teams are doing whatever necessary to avoid Jadeveon Clowney; running the ball opposite field or just simply throwing the ball away from him. Clowney obviously hasn’t had the production expected from him thus far through six games and has been sidelined with numerous ailments. However, Clowney has plenty of film and is still expected to be a top 5 draft pick; if not the first overall pick in next year’s NFL Draft.
After watching plenty of film this season I have questioned myself, “why don’t we line him up at MLB and let him go to work?” I have all the faith in the world in our coaches and trust that they make the right decisions 90% of the time, they are not perfect and make mistakes too, but overall they do an excellent job. I’m not saying start him every game and leave him at LB, but put JD in the middle on a few series and see what happens. This will obviously rid the double and triple teams off of the line and allow him to simply, to just play the ball. Clowney possesses freakish athleticism at 6’6 and can certainly play sideline to sideline. Offenses would not be able to just run away from him or throw the ball away from him, because he will be attacking from the middle with a cushion off of the line of scrimmage. Some may say, well, and then the other team will drop back and pass all day on our suspect secondary. This may hold some truth, but our defensive line is good enough and deep enough to still put pressure on the QB without Clowney on the line as they’ve been able to all season long; and good luck throwing over the middle with “ The Great Wall of China “ dropped back into coverage.
This is simply just a thought and nothing more. I would just be intrigued to see what would happen and if Clowney would be able to make more of an impact on the ball. Would he be able to make more plays instead of being taken out of plays?...
